Saturday, October 4, 2008 10:35 AM Screwed exams are finally over. But i still have to do my tuition hw. :( Went out for peeps yesterday, and we just wandered aimlessly and talking crap. argh. Boredom. ya, and thanks to that i am given a whole list of chores to do. Hmmm... we will be going bowling and shopping on Monday but i haven't ask my mum for permission. freaks. i kind of miss guides sessions. okay, that was random. but that reminds me that I have only 20 days left in cedar with these wonderful and crappy people. haha. Shall take lots of photos (: but i'll be coming back! okay, i just finished my speech for tuition on abolishment if capital punishment, death penalty. (some parts of extracts of cat's speech) He stood still on the metal trapdoors, the sound of his heart pounding echoed in the room enclosed by four cold concrete walls --- his last memory he had of Earth. A thick-coiled rope hung around his neck as his hands were tightly bound behind his back. These tormenting moments seemed to pass slower then before. Then with a sudden tug, another life was lost. Every year, thousands of lives, both innocent and sinful, are lost through capital punishment worldwide. Lives that we human beings have no right to claim. So, what exactly is capital punishment? It is a death penalty calling for the execution of a person by the state as punishment for a crime. The abolishment of this death penalty has sparked many controversies worldwide, causing some countries to abolish capital punishment. But what exactly are the reasons for the abolishment and why do some people strongly support the implementation of the death penalty? There are millions of people worldwide who strongly support the abolishment of the death penalty mainly because of this reason: there is proven risk of executing innocent people. The avoidable killing of an innocent person can never be justified, in any circumstances, as factors such as overzealous prosecution, mistaken testimony, inept defense counsel and seemingly conclusive circumstantial evidence can result in a person wrongly accused of a crime, which costs his or her life. Surveys have shown that 125 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. What if the people who were not released were innocent? Wouldn’t the judicial system of a country that is suppose to be upright and fair be killing innocent people just because of their decision and assumption? Also, as the saying goes, “To err is human.” Since everyone makes mistakes, shouldn’t everyone be given a second chance to repent? By executing criminals, we are denying them the chance to repent their crime, turn over a new leaf and even possibly emerge as a reformed and useful member of society. Two wrongs can never make a right, Killing them will never un-do what he or she has already done, so what is the point? Thus, leading many people to believe that the death penalty is taking away the opportunity for people to repent and thus, strongly believe that this penalty should be abolished. However, there are still many people who believe in capital punishment mainly because they feel that it acts as a deterrent to others. This death penalty evokes fear in people who have an intention of committing atrocious crimes like murder. Thus, preventing re-offending and new people from offending. Most of the times, people take capital punishment and the executing of criminals as a mean of retribution, allowing family members of the victim to diminish the pain and hatred boiling in them. In conclusion, the abolishment of capital punishment, the death penalty has both its pros and cons. Capital punishment may just be a punishment for a person’s wrongdoings to some, while it may be an ultimate, irreversible denial of human rights to others. What exactly is the right choice, to abolish or not to abolish? All this lies in the mindset of a person and the angle in which you look at. Thus, I would end with this saying, which may change your mindset or strengthen your mindset. “If you don’t rape the rapists, molest the child molesters, or rape the rapists, then don’t murder the murderers.” (: my stand: abolish capital punishment |
